In an effort to assist families and district employees with long range planning, Jackson-Madison County School System officials presented calendar drafts this month to the school board for both 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, according to a Thursday morning news release from the Jackson-Madison County School System.
“Designing the academic calendar is a collaborative process as our 15 member calendar committee includes parents, teachers, and administrators from both the school level and district level,” said deputy superintendent Dr. Vivian Williams.
One noticeable adjustment made by the committee is a recommendation for a week long Thanksgiving Break. This extension is being made without removing days from the district’s standard Fall Break.
“That’s awesome. It will give teachers and families a chance to travel and catch up on time missed with loved ones. Also, teachers who oversee extracurricular activities are always running throughout the year to meet those demands. Having additional days off during the holiday season will allow us to pause and focus on many of the personal things we need to focus on,” said Liberty Tech athletic director Aaron Woods. Woods is also a member of the Superintendent’s Teacher Cabinet.
Both 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 calendars will be sent out to families and community members for review this month. The calendars must be finalized by the state after board approval.
“These proposed calendars meet all the requirements for total number of instructional days, parent-teacher conferences and professional development. We look forward to every step of the review process as it is a collaborative effort,” Dr. Williams said.
“Knowing we have the extra two days to shop, clean, prepare food and have additional time with family is such a blessing. I am grateful to our Dr. King and the school board for providing this opportunity,” said JMC CyberSchool teacher Kimberly Larkins.
