In this episode of “Hub City Now” host Tyrone Tony Reed Jr. interviewed world-renowned, award-winning illustrator, author, comic strip artist and songwriter Guy Gilchrist (best known as Jim Henson’s cartoonist).
Gilchrist drew the “Muppets” comic strip (printed in hundreds of newspapers daily from 1981 to 1986), instrumental in the creation of “The Muppet Babies” and “Fraggle Rock”, worked for a number of years on “Tiny Toons” and Looney Tunes” and has also set his hand to some of the most beloved, high-profile cartoons and characters such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tom & Jerry, The Pink Panther, Minnie Mouse and more.
In 1995, Gilchrist took over the daily comic strip “Nancy” created in 1938 by Ernie Bushmiller. Gilchrist continued the story of Nancy, Sluggo, Aunt Fritzi and all the characters of the internationally distributed strip for nearly 23 years (from 1995 to 2018).
His current project was released October 5, 2020, “Monster Dance,” (penned by Eva Lou with illustrations by Gilchrist, and published by Madeleine Editions) was released internationally as both an animated, interactive Apple book or physical book. The book teaches young children how tame the COVID-19 monster and that with proper hygiene and careful safety measures, the monster is not nearly as scary. It is also the first enhanced/interactive animated book for children ages 3-6 to teach them how to live in a pandemic world.
