As the State of Tennessee, the City of Jackson and Madison County governments prepare to phase in the reopening of businesses and services, the Jackson-Madison County
Library asks patrons to begin returning items to library drop boxes beginning Monday, April 27.

Library items can be returned to the drop boxes at the Main Library or the North Branch, as well as boxes located outside J.C. Penney and Madison Square Shopping Center South, according to a Friday afternoon news release. Overdue fines will not be assessed until June; but this time will allow library staff to take necessary precautions to quarantine items prior to placing them on the shelves.

“Our Library Board of Trustees and I are working closely with the City, County and Health Department to prepare a plan that will eventually allow us to safely reopen the library,” said Dinah Harris, library director. “During this first phase, we will start the process of accepting returns and applying best practices for the handling of those materials. We anticipate the second phase to include curbside pickup of items before transitioning into allowing a limited number of patrons into our buildings at a given time. It is vitally important that we proceed in a way that protects not only our staff, but the general public, so we cannot say right now when we will be able to move into the next phase of our plan.”

The release said the library encourages patrons to continue to use its online resources for reading, listening to and watching electronic content through Tennessee READS, hoopla, the Tennessee Electronic Library and others. Information about the library’s resources and current plan of action are posted on its website at www.jmclibrary.org or on its Facebook page.

The Jackson-Madison County Library is located at 433 E. Lafayette St. in downtown Jackson. For more information, contact the Library at 731-425-8600, visit the Library’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/JMCLibrary or its website at www.jmclibrary.org.
