Health Officials: Women, African-Americans Make Up Over 50 Percent of County’s Confirmed COVID-19 Cases As Number of Cases Surpasses 60

The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department reported three new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Madison County Friday morning, bringing the total of confirmed cases in the county to 65. Fifty-two percent of the confirmed cases identify as Black or African-Americans and 54 percent of those confirmed to have COVID-19 are female, according to data from the department.

Kim Tedford, executive director of the JMCR Heath Dept., made the announcement during a virtual media briefing.

The newest patients include:

  • a 59-year-old male (not hospitalized)
  • a 22-year-old male (hospitalization unknown)
  • a 54-year-old male (hospitalization unknown)

The department’s epidemiology staff are still trying to make contact with two of the patients, so hospitalization status is not known at this time, according to a news release from the department. The department is also reaching out to the people who had contact with these patients.

As of Friday, 13 Madison County COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized.

The department also released the following demographic information about Madison County’s confirmed COVID-19 cases:

RACE:

Black or African-American: 34 cases, 52 percent

White: 13 cases, 20 percent

Asian: 2 cases, 3 percent

Hispanic: 1 case, 2 percent

Unspecified: 15 cases, 23 percent

 

GENDER:

Female: 35 cases, 54 percent

Male: 30 cases, 46 percent

 

HEALTH STATUS:

Recovered: 22 cases, 34 percent

Not Recovered: 20 cases, 31 percent

Better: 14 cases, 21 percent

Unknown: 9 cases, 14 percent
