Students at Madison Academic Magnet High School will walk through the doors of their brand new, three-story school building this week. Seniors and juniors will participate in a one-hour orientation on Thursday followed by an orientation for sophomores and freshmen Friday.

“It’s been a process all the way through November,” Principal Chad Guthrie said. “We started moving around December 15. Movers were still moving boxes last week, and some teachers were up here during Christmas break. It has been ongoing. We’re still unboxing.”

Monday, January 10, will be the first full day of class for all Madison students on the new campus.  Although excitement is the general feeling among Madison teachers, there is also a bit of nostalgia for longtime faculty members.

“I have a couple of teachers who were JCM teachers when that old building was a part of JCM. If you’ve ever moved from your home that you’ve been in for a long time, it’s the same thing; but there’s also excitement for the new. The new building is very nice,” Guthrie said.

In addition to new classrooms and an increase in science labs, students will also benefit immediately from the school’s proximity to the University of Memphis Lambuth campus.

“Our students can take some dual enrollment classes through the University of Memphis. We also utilize their athletic facilities for soccer, basketball, and baseball,” Guthrie said.

Current Madison parents will participate in an open house from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Friday. A second open house is being planned for the community in February.
