Jackson-Madison County is hosting several programs in November in honor of Veterans Day. At the Bicentennial program on Friday, November 12th at 12:00 pm titled Madison County Veteran Heroes – Hear Their Stories, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Members will speak concerning local veteran heroes, beginning with the Revolutionary War.
On Friday, November 19th, there will be another Bicentennial program at 12:00 pm. “More Than Names on a Wall” by Ricky Long will be a presentation of reflections on the Veterans Monument in Liberty Gardens.
Additionally, veterans’ historical material will be displayed in the library display cases. These programs align with the Bicentennial’s November theme, Patriotism & Veterans.
“We encourage folks to come out to the library and learn more about our community’s heroes,” said Library Director, Dinah Harris. “Just in time for Veteran’s Day, these programs are a great way to honor our local veteran heroes.”
This year, the library will also spend November gathering materials from the community to donate to Operation Gratitude for Veteran’s Day. Operation Gratitude is an organization that gathers gifts of appreciation– donations, letters, etc.– and put them into the hands of veterans. We will be encouraging patrons to come pick up paracord bracelet crafts to make and donate, and to write letters of appreciation until November 30th.
Operation Gratitude’s mission is to forge strong bonds between Americans and their Military and First Responder heroes through volunteer service projects, acts of gratitude, and meaningful engagements in communities nationwide. More than 17 years ago, in March of 2003, Operation Gratitude sent its first four Care Packages to deployed Service Members in Iraq. Since its inception, the nonprofit has given millions of Americans the opportunity to express appreciation through hands on volunteerism and lifted the spirits of more than 1.8 million Deployed Troops, and another 1.2 million recruit graduates, veterans, military families, first responders, and healthcare heroes.
