District Attorney General Jody S. Pickens announced Monday that October 14, 2021, a Madison County jury convicted Michael Marcel Brown, 38, of Jackson, Tenn., of first degree murder in the perpetration of attempted aggravated robbery in the 2018 murder of Najeab Alshaif at the Goldline Convenience Store located at 1819 Highway 45 By-Pass.
“Many people in Tennessee may not be aware that there is no statute of limitation for first degree murder. October 14, 2021, Michael Marcel Brown, learned that lesson the hard way,” said Pickens. “The criminal element should know that law enforcement never stops investigating homicides. This case was cold for approximately 18 months until investigators received information that allowed them to put together a case that my office could present to a jury. Deputy District Attorney General Shaun Brown did a stellar job in presenting the case to the jury. Sergeant Nick Donald, of the Jackson Police Department, did an outstanding job in the investigation, and thanks should also be given to the Major Crimes Unit and patrol division, of the Jackson Police Department, who all contributed to holding Michael Marcell Brown accountable for his part in taking the life of another human being.”
Pickens continued, “To the families of homicide victims whose killers have not yet been brought to justice, do not lose hope that we will eventually be able to achieve justice for your loved one. Law enforcement will continue to seek ways to prepare a case that can be presented to a jury and hopefully hold the killer accountable.”
April 30, 2018, in the very early morning hours, Tony Greer entered the Goldline Convenience Store armed with a handgun and demanded money from Alshaif who was working as a clerk at that time. When Alshaif did not provide any money as demanded, Greer shot him once in the abdomen. The wound proved fatal. The investigation revealed that Brown conspired with Tony Greer to commit the criminal acts that ultimately caused the untimely death of Alshaif.
In addition to being convicted of first degree murder in the perpetration of attempted aggravated robbery, the jury also convicted Brown of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated robbery. The jury imposed the maximum fines of $50,000, $10,000, and $10,000 on the three counts, which should provide some insight into how the jury felt about what Brown had done.
Brown has been previously convicted of aggravated burglary, theft under $1000, and aggravated robbery and served time in the Tennessee Department of Correction.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 6, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Don Allen. Brown faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for the murder conviction and three to six years in prison for each of the other two counts.
