WRAP Team Celebrates Domestic Violence Awareness Month with Joint City/County Proclamation

The Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program (WRAP) team at the Safe Hope Center in Jackson celebrated Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Jackson-Madison County with a joint City of Jackson (Tenn.)/ Madison County proclamation before the Jackson City Council Tuesday morning, according to a Facebook post from the organization.
Below is the content of the proclamation:
WHEREAS, There were 1,363 domestic violence reports in Jackson-Madison County in 2020; and
WHEREAS, Forty-five percent of reported crimes against persons in Jackson-Madison County involved domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, Jackson-Madison County reported four victims killed by a domestic partner in 2020; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence can include verbal, emotional, financial, and physical abuse, as well as confinement, intimidation, isolation, and threats; and
WHEREAS, The abuse of a family member can have a long-term damaging impact on survivors and their children that impacts family, friends, and the community-at-large; and
WHEREAS, Families are indispensable to a stable society and should be a place of support to instill responsibility and values in the next generation; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is widespread and is devastating to society as a whole, but particularly to women and children; and
WHEREAS, The problem of domestic violence is not confined to any group or groups of people but crosses all economic, racial, gender, educational, religious, and societal barriers and is sustained by societal indifference; and
WHEREAS, The survivors of domestic violence should have help to find the compassion, comfort, and healing they need, and domestic abusers should be held fully accountable for their crimes against persons and the community; and
WHEREAS, Our community has a civic and moral obligation to work to prevent domestic violence, and to address its brutal and destructive effects, and to make ending domestic violence as a community priority.
WHEREAS, Jackson-Madison County is unique in West Tennessee with a family justice center, The Safe Hope Center, where victims and survivors can meet in one place with organizations and entities including WRAP (Wo/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program), Jackson Police Department Domestic Violence Investigation Division, District Attorney’s Office, and West Tennessee Legal Services.
NOW, THEREFORE, in recognition of the important work being done by our community to prevent domestic violence, support survivors of domestic violence, and hold perpetrators of such violence accountable for their crimes against the community, WE, SCOTT CONGER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE, AND JIMMY HARRIS, MAYOR OF MADISON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER 2021 AS
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
