Since 1987, September has been marked as Library Card Sign Up Month to celebrate the beginning of the school year and show how vital libraries and schools working together is for their communities. Normally, the Library would celebrate that toward the beginning of the month with a party of sorts to sign students up for library cards. This event has always been promoted and attended by Councilman Ernest Brooks and planned by Angela Parks. The library would like to thank them both very much for doing so years’ past.

This year, JMC Library is proud to announce that we have been working on a partnership with the Jackson-Madison County School System.

Sora, the Student Reading App, is an app that many schools have started using to allow their students to access materials at home, on their own devices. JMC School System has prepared Sora for student use, which will allow them to access age-appropriate items that the library has on Overdrive, at no charge to the school system. Students will be able to use their student IDs to access over 28,000 items for free.

This service is ready to use starting immediately, with more plans in development. In the future, the library and school system plan to extend this partnership to allow students to checkout physical materials from the library with their Student ID. We are also discussing the possibility of a courier service to deliver library books to the schools for students who may not be able to make the trip to the library. This way, every child within the Jackson-Madison County School system will have a card of their own with no hassle.

Both JMC Library and JMC Schools are thrilled to announce this partnership and make it known to students and the community as a whole.

The Jackson-Madison County Library is located at 433 E. Lafayette St. in downtown. For more information, contact the Library at 731-425-8600, visit the Library’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/JMCLibrary or its website at www.jmclibrary.org.
