NWS: Heat Advisory in Effect Until 8 P.M. Thursday for West Tennessee

The National Weather Service in Memphis has reported that a Heat Advisory will remain in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday morning to 8 p.m. Central Standard Time Thursday evening.

NWS said heat index values up to 110 expected across West Tennessee, North Mississippi and East Arkansas.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, the advisory stated.

In West Tennessee, the following counties are included in the advisory: Lake, Obion, Weakley, Henry, Dyer, Gibson, Carroll, Benton, Lauderdale, Tipton, Haywood, Crockett, Madison, Chester, Henderson, Decatur, Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman, McNairy, and Hardin.

This includes the following cities: Tiptonville, Union City, Martin, Dresden, Paris, Dyersburg, Humboldt, Milan, Huntingdon, Camden, Ripley, Covington, Brownsville, Alamo, Jackson, Henderson, Lexington, Parsons, Decaturville, Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, Memphis, Millington, Somerville, Oakland, Bolivar, Selmer, and Savannah

NWS said the following precautionary/preparedness actions: drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.
