The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a freeze warning in effect for portions of West Tennessee from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Central Thursday and a freeze warning in effect from 12 a.m. Thursday night until 9 a.m. Central Friday.

NWS said for tonight’s freeze warning, sub-freezing temperatures of 30 to 32 degrees are expected. For the second freeze warning, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees are expected.

NWS said the following counties in Tennessee will be affected by the freeze tonight and Friday: Benton, Madison, Carroll, Chester, Decatur, Dyer, Gibson, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion, Tipton, Weakley, Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman, McNairy and Hardin counties.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

NWS said these are the precautionary/preparedness actions people should take:

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
