The Jackson-Madison County School System continues to make bold efforts to retain and attract high quality teachers with student achievement as the targeted outcome.
Superintendent Dr. Marlon King announced his investment plan for teachers; as well as activities earmarked for the $16.7 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds.
“It is not a secret that we believe our employees are our greatest asset. Investing in them through financial means and professional development will be a huge benefit for student achievement,” Dr. King said.
Funding streams were identified to provide a raise and two bonuses for both certified and non-certified staff. Details of the raises are forthcoming, but bonuses details include: in May, certificated employees will receive a $280 bonus and non-certified employees will receive a $200 bonus. Because of the service and dedication from our contracted workers, they will be included in the bonuses as well. Their percentage will be based on the terms and agreement within their contract. Some contracted employees work 100 days while others work 120 days. The second bonus will be given in December and will include a $1,500 tag for certified and a $1,000 tag for non-certified. The contracted employees will be included in this structure as well.
The ESSER 2.0 Budget proposal was presented to the committee and will be taken before the full board during the Board Work Session. There are very innovative opportunities included within this proposal. District leaders are determined to maximize recovery for student learning loss and accelerate achievement. For full transparency, the ESSER 2.0 budget proposal is aligned to the system’s goals, belief statements and the state allowables.
“When you are managing a budget of this size, you owe it to the citizens to share the thinking behind the spending. We want to continue our pattern of transparency, as we build trust,” said Superintendent King.
In the coming days, the internal budget committee will create a draft budget for FY22. More information and details of the budget will be shared at the monthly Budget Committee meetings.
