Jackson-Madison County Board of Education officials met for nearly two-hours on Monday in a work session that covered a range of topics. according to a Tuesday afternoon news release from the Jackson-Madison County School System. Zone maps for the JCM 6-12 campus and the state’s one-time hazard pay bonus for teachers were among the most detailed agenda items covered during the February work session.

“We have non-certified staff and 120 day contract employees who are not covered in the state’s bonus plan. They’re working during this pandemic and cover some of our vacancies. We want to include them in some way,” Board chairman Pete Johnson said.

Superintendent Dr. Marlon King anticipated providing employees with a bonus that follows the same procedures used in the 2020 Christmas bonus provided by the board – with the district covering taxes associated with the bonus to ensure teachers take home a full payout.

“While fund balance monies would be used to cover the cost of providing bonuses to a wider group of educators and non-certified staff than the state includes, I expect our 2021 expenditure savings would offset those costs by year’s end,” Dr. King said.

Board members also reviewed revisions of the JCM zoning maps and received updates on the process of bringing the new 6-12 format to the district’s portfolio of schools. Clarity was provided for the zone lines so as to not interfere with families already aligned with the Jackson Careers and Technology Elementary 4-8 format. District leaders expect to complete the accreditation process and receive respective school ID numbers for JCM Middle School and JCM High School by mid-spring.

“It’s an 18 page document that requires information such as the official name of the school, administrator information, grade bands, and the projected number of teachers. We anticipate the board will give us approval to move forward with the application,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Vivian Williams said.

Academic leaders also announced a forthcoming title adjustment as JMC CyberSchool will be known as Jackson Academic Success Academy (JASA) in 2021-2022.
