Jackson, Tennessee — (Jan. 12, 2021) — Jackson Christian’s Theatre performance of Disney’s “Newsies” The Musical will make history as the school’s first production available to an online audience this week.
Shows will be available beginning Thursday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Family pricing to view online will be $45 per show.
“We’re thankful to our partners for their support for our theater arts department and helping us pioneer a new and exciting way to deliver our performances to a larger audience,” Jenna Britt, Jackson Christian’s director of music theater, said.
“Newsies” is Britt’s 21st production at Jackson Christian.
“I’ve always loved this show because it’s off the charts challenging, it has serious themes and the music really drives the show,” Britt said.
Thirty-two students are part of this production and many of them have athletic and artistic backgrounds. Students participated in a summer clinic where they sharpened their ballet, tap, vocal and acting and speaking skills.
“There are no small roles,” Britt said. “We started with auditions in August and they have been rehearsing since mid-September.”
In addition to learning the material, Jackson Christian theater students also mastered the art of live-action set changing, which is not typical in a high school production, Britt said.
“The students are looking forward to performing and they enjoy how each role is active,” Britt said. “They have worked hard for four months wearing masks all the time and rehearsing in small groups. We’d love to have a huge virtual audience since we’re not able to have an open house due to Covid-19.”
