New Code of Conduct and Instructional Model for Teaching and Learning will assist progress

JACKSON, Tenn. – District leaders are turning their attention to new goals and increased oversight as the Jackson-Madison County School System prepares to enter the second semester of the New Normal Initiative. Superintendent Dr. Marlon King and his deputy superintendents discussed their immediate goals for 2021 at the conclusion of the December board meeting.

“As we conclude 2020, it’s important to remember that we initiated a New Normal Initiative. Reentry. Recover. Reimagine. I think we are well on our way with reentry. We have to work out a strategy on how we recover, but the reimagine part is the exciting part,” Dr. King said.

In addition to working with principals on a new code of conduct for schools, Dr. King has also connected with teachers to implement a Superintendent’s Teacher Cabinet. This advisory panel will serve as a sounding board for Executive leadership and direct the development of an Instructional Model for Teaching and Learning that supports both in-person and virtual instruction.

“We’re having discussions with our senior leadership to decide ways we can ensure all of our students are learning and how we are tracking the process. We really talked about building relationships, checking data, student engagement, and feedback. We’re in the process of developing some metrics to look at our virtual learners so that we can keep up with that,” said Dr. Vivian Williams, Deputy Superintendent for Academics, Schools, & Students.

Although schools continue to close across the state, and in our region, JMCSS leaders remain committed to offering in-person learning options for students in Jackson-Madison County.

“We have a new vision; Best by any measure. The board approved the mission and the goal statements. We’re getting ready to go into some intense reflection and deliberate planning. We’re excited about the strategic planning process, as now we reimagine what our public school system could look like,” Dr. King said.

Executive team members are expected to announce this week additional supports for the LOOP program and discuss Spring 2021 schedule details.
