The Best by Any Measure! Those five words, agreed upon by Jackson-Madison County School Board members on Saturday, November 14, encapsulate the board’s reimagined vision for JMCSS. Crafting a fresh vision statement was one of several objectives JMCSS board members accomplish during their annual board retreat.
“It’s going to allow the school system to have something that is recognizable. Every parent, whether they have a child in Jackson-Madison County Schools or otherwise, is going to know what this district represents,” Board member Sherry Franks said.
The six-hour retreat, which was held at the Jackson Chamber, provided a time of reevaluation and goal setting for the board. Ben Torres, assistant director and general counsel for the Tennessee School Board Association (i.e., TSBA), facilitated the retreat.
“With Ben being an attorney, he was able to answer a lot of the questions we had concerning upcoming legislation, current legislation, and things that the governor might do related to COVID-19,” said board chairman Pete Johnson.
“This retreat went great. I felt like everybody was communicating, working together and they really came together on the vision, the mission, and the goals for the district,” Torres said.
In addition to setting goals and expectations for the 2021-2022 school year, board members shared their thoughts on capital projects – including construction at JCM, Madison and plans for Pope School.
“That strategic goal piece belongs to the board, but we share that with the superintendent because he has the responsibility of coming up with the strategy to make it happen,” Johnson said.
