The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department received positive test results for one more confirmed case of COVID-19, according to a Wednesday morning news release from the health department. There are now 209 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County.

The newest case is a 44-year-old male, who is not hospitalized. Epidemiology staff are reaching out to people who had close contact with this individual.

One Madison County resident is currently hospitalized and on a ventilator. And 22 COVID-19 patients, who are not Madison County residents, are currently hospitalized at Jackson Madison County General Hospital with four on ventilators, according to health officials.

Health Department Director Kim Tedford said there has been a huge spike in cases, with a 23 case increase in two weeks. In 10 of those cases, the exposure is unknown and is attributed to community spread, four were exposed in the workplace, four traveled out of state, three were exposed through family contact and two were exposed through healthcare exposure.

The department’s epidemiology staff are reaching out to people who had close contact with these cases.

“We expect to see increases, we just don’t like seeing huge increases at one time,” Tedford said during a news conference Wednesday morning.

Tedford said 190 Madison County residents have recovered from COVID-19 and three people say they are feeling better.

She said residents need to continue social distancing, wearing masks when they are out running errands and around others.
