The Jackson-Madison County School System released an update Friday to announce how the school system will continue to serve its students and children after it was announced that schools across the state would remain closed most of April because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a news release, Alison Pyron, School Nutrition Director wrote that the school district’s school nutrition program will continue to provide breakfast and lunch meals for all JMCSS students and children 18 years and under. She said meals are tentatively scheduled to continue through April 24.

The release  said the USDA has passed an immediate change that children no longer have to be present at pickup locations to receive meals.

Procedures will require that all sites maintain a record of children’s names when a child is not present to receive meals, the release said. Meal counts will be taken and participants may continue to choose the most convenient location to pick up their child’s meal, regardless of school zone or grade level.

The release said the time for “drive-thru” pick up is between 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Meal pick-ups will be at the following school locations:

• Alexander Elementary, 900 N. Highland Ave. (Meals at this location will be handed out from a bus in the parking lot)
• Arlington Elementary, 701 Arlington Ave.
• Denmark Elementary, 1945 Denmark-Jackson
• Isaac Lane Elementary, 746 Lexington Ave.
• Northeast Middle, 2665 Christmasville Road
• North Parkway Middle, 1341 North Parkway
• South Elementary, 570 Stone Road, Pinson, Tenn.
• Thelma Barker Elementary, 1470 Ashport Road
• West Bemis Middle, 230 D Street

The release said social distancing will be in practice and no one will be allowed to enter the school building except for essential personnel.

The school district also thanks the community for allowing School Nutrition Services to assist its students and meet the needs of its community.
