The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department reported Tuesday afternoon that one person has tested positive for COVID-19, while 25 Madison County residents have tested negative for COVID-19 at the Tennessee Department of Health State Public Health Laboratory. Five tests are still pending at the state lab. One sample was unsatisfactory.

JMC Regional Health Department said there have been 35 negatives from private testing labs

The Madison County woman with COVID-19 is 23 years old and had traveled alone to Miami, Florida for Spring Break. She returned to Madison County and was feeling sick so she self-isolated herself until Saturday, when she became feverish. The woman then went to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital’s emergency room, where she was tested, treated and sent home Sunday. She was told to self-isolate, which she and her family, who she lives with, have done and continue to do so.
The JMC Regional Health Department was notified by the Tennessee Department of Health State Public Health Laboratory at 5:52 p.m. Monday of the positive COVID-19 case in Madison County. The health department let the public know during an 8 p.m. media briefing.
Residents who may have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact their primary care provider for testing. Please call your provider before you go to the office. If you experience severe illness and need to go to the emergency room, please call ahead.

Providers may choose to use commercial laboratories for testing.

The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department is not testing for COVID-19.

We encourage residents to take routine precautions used in guarding against respiratory
viruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Stay away from people who are sick
