Mayor Scott Conger announced Thursday, June 17, to city employees the closure of government offices in observance of Juneteenth.
“As a city, we are proud to support this legislation and observe this new national federal holiday,” said Mayor Scott Conger, “This is an important step forward for our country.”
President Biden signed Congress’s bill Thursday declaring June 19, Juneteenth, the 12th federal holiday.
June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger announced that the Civil War had ended and that tens of thousands of African-American slaves were now free, two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
City of Jackson Recreation and Parks Summer Camps at Westwood Gardens and TR White Sportsplex will remain open.
Garbage pickup services will operate as usual.
